STLA EARLY SCHOOL SUPPORT
The Early School Support Program (ESSP) provides specialist support for 12 students identified as being in specific need of intervention in Kindergarten, Year 1 or Year 2. A specialist teacher, Mrs Ross, provides intensive support four days a week in the form of small group instruction and team teaching with classroom teachers. The structured support students receive at this early stage in their learning, before repeated failure can occur, aims to enable the targeted students to achieve accelerated academic progress and maintain access to mainstream class programs.
READING RECOVERY
Reading Recovery (RR) is an effective and very intensive early intervention literacy program based on a student’s specific strengths. Through daily lessons with our special trained RR teacher, Mrs Lorenzen, students are helped to make rapid improvement in both reading and writing. Many of these targeted students are from interstate or non-English speaking backgrounds. After 12 to 20 weeks of teaching, students generally exit the program with a reading level equal to their peers. All students are monitored closely after leaving the program to ensure that progress is sustained.
EARLY INTERVENTION CLASS
The Early Intervention class (EI) is a class for preschoolers with a learning disability. It is housed in a purpose built teaching environment which includes an outdoor play area with soft fall, outdoor play equipment and sunshade. The teacher, Miss Glover, and teacher’s aides work with eight students in a two and a half hour morning session and then the teacher makes home visits in the afternoons.
SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASS
This class for students with a mild intellectual disability (IM) provides a rich learning environment in a small group setting. With an enrolment of 10 students this year and with a full time teacher’s aide special, these students from Years 3 to 6 are able to work on their individual programs in Numeracy and Literacy and work together as a group for all other KLAs. All programs have been designed and implemented with their special needs in mind. This year the class has participated in a pilot Learn to Touch Type program with some impressive results. Students have many opportunities for integration in the mainstream classes and participate in all school events including senior camp, PSSA sport, becoming a prefect, school choirs, Rock Eisteddfod performances, recorder lessons, SRC representatives and running assemblies.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) Dee Why School offers an excellent program which supports students for whom English is their second language. Two professional and skills ESL teachers deliver excellent programs which accelerate the acquisition of the English language.
SUPPORT TEACHER LEARNING ASSISTANCE (STLA) The Support Teacher Learning Assistance (STLA) works in our school two and a half days per week. The teacher is available to work both in the classroom with the class teacher or with children individually or in group settings. The STLA works with children with identifies learning difficulties to develop their full potential. |
